Nelson Muntz about to take part in his first Hell in a Cell match |
- Billy Corgan is no longer apart of TNA it seems. Accompanying this are his claims that Dixie Carter owes $2.7million. Fuck sake TNA, you struck gold with BROKEN Matt Hardy this year but ya couldn't help but fuck yourself over.
- WWE has confirmed that we will be getting more Cruiserweight action in the form of 205 LIVE, a Cruiserweight exclusive show on the WWE Network following SmackDown! on Tuesday nights. Essentially, I think they realised they fucked up with the Cruiserweights on RAW. Nevertheless, pretty exciting stuff.
- I was disappointed to hear about the World of Sport taping being a bit shit. Guess its time to lower my expectations for when it comes to British screens sometime soon. Shame
- Its being reported that there has been developments in regards to WWE's women's tournament a la Cruiserweight Classic. It's being said that those who have been contacted have been told of tapings in January and some hearing of some in March. Cool!
- Tim Wiese appeared at WWE's show in Munich, helping out Sheasaro (I dunno if they're going by that but its what I call 'em). Guess he might be appearing on our screens soon.
And now, its the glaze of this wrestling blog box of donuts, its the matches! (NOTE: I have been able to watch NJPW: Power Struggle yet, so expect that next time)
WWE Hell in a Cell
Best Match on HiaC: Charlotte vs Sasha Banks - RAW Women's Championship Hell in a Cell Match
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I legitimately thought Charlotte vs Sasha was the best match on the card. Yes, the whole stretcher bit was sucky, but fuck me that powerbomb through the announce table at the start was awesome.
I thought these two put on a match that appeared like a real blood feud. The strikes this pair landed on each other were pretty damn hard, chopping and kicking with some mustard on 'em. It was much more emotive than the other cell matches, something that really does go towards making the cell what it is.
Possibly my favourite moment was when Sasha escaped from Charlotte's Figure-8 submission using the chair. I thought that was really inventive, and it popped me big. They did a lot of weapons and cell spots that I thought were cool, like Sasha's corner knee drop thing with the chair, and the general cell usage.
It was a shame about the tables in this match not breaking, but those times Sasha was getting tossed into that furniture and bouncing off were brutal enough. The ending was a bit wonky and the booking decision may not have been the greatest, but I came out of that thinking it was the best match these two have had in a long while, perhaps since WrestleMania.
I didn't think that Owens/Rollins cell match was all that special. It had a freaking sweet spot with the powerbomb through those tables, but other than that, I just didn't find much of it all that grand. The Jericho interference did nothing for me, kinda detracted from it if you ask me.
Monday Night RAW
Best Match on RAW (31/10/16): Chris Jericho vs Roman Reigns - WWE United States Championship Match
But Jericho is welcome here!
We're on Monday now and watching RAW. RAW is getting pretty hard to slog through lately I must say, and there is a lot of skippable bits. However, out of everything we got on this episode, I think that the best match was Chris Jericho challenging Roman Reigns for the United States Championship.
Jericho's in-ring cockiness is great, something he does better than anyone else in my opinion.
There were a couple of steps spots, but other than that I can't really remember much at all. I'm sorry my dear readers, but that's just the affect that RAW has on a human mind. This was on last, so a good 2 and a half hours of content was consumed before getting to this, and not all of it tasted sweet.
SmackDown! LIVE
Best Match on SD! (1/11/16): AJ Styles vs Dean Ambrose
Week-in, week-out, this main event scene on SmackDown! is weaving some gold. These guys are having damn good matches and though we've seen 'em go at it before several times over, its still entertaining.
These two seem to get more and more physical every week, going to the outside a lot more as the fued has progressed. I think I'm liking Dean a lot more in this feud with AJ seeing as he's not being used as the smaller, faster guy, which is what he was against Bray Wyatt, Lesnar, Owens and Rollins to an extent. This allows for AJ to be the pace setter whilst you have Dean as the more 'fuck off with that' wrestler, taking down AJ to the ground. I also want to point out that I'm really liking the Texas Cloverleaf he's been using.
We had some run-ins with the man they call James Ellsworth who was told to stay backstage, but he just couldn't help himself. AJ made sure to say hello.
AJ would then fall right in place for a Dirty Deeds into a pinfall. And we are getting Ambrose/Styles one more time at TLC. This is gonna be AJ's first ladder match in WWE, so this should be interesting.
NXT
Best Match on NXT (2/11/16): Roderick Strong vs Shane Thorne
What an unexpectedly cool match from NXT this week. Yes, that is a singles match taking place in a tag team tournament, but Regal said it was okay so I'm not gonna cause a scene.
This is most probably the best match I've seen Shane Thorne have. As part of TM-61, the matches aren't the most thrilling and can be sorta bland, but he blew me away here. He pulled off some moves that are much cooler than what he's usually been doing, like a massive sit-out powerbomb and a Del Rio-esque rope hung foot stomp.
Roddy was also great in this one. He'd take a bunch of what Thorne was dishing out and then derail all spirit he had with a big display of power. I'm so glad he's kept the 'Messiah of the Backbreaker' monicre, and he showed off why its so fitting;
I love when NXT tapes matches from their tours like this, in Sacramento here for this one. Full Sail is a nice arena, but the echo and size of that crowd is great to hear and see. Real ncie match here on this show, I really liked it and definitely recommend checking it out.
Ring of Honour
Best Match on ROH TV (Episode 267): The Cabinet (Caprice Coleman, Rhett Titus & Kenny King) vs ACH, Jay White & KUSHIDA - Six Man Tag Title Tournament
As we get closer to Final Battle this December, the tournament to crown the first ROH Six Man Tag Team Champions is quickly coming to a head. This week, we've got semi-final action between The Cabinet and the trio of ACH, Jay White and KUSHIDA.
Caprice Coleman has started screaming loads, which is pretty funny I must say. Like super high pitch and super frequent. He had White in the corner and was screaming 'WHAT'D YOU SAY 'BOUT MY MOMMA' over and over.
There was lotsa shit going on in this one. There always seemed to be more than two people in the ring performing some sort of double/triple teams on people or simultaneous offence. Very frequent tags in this one, and more often than not stuff was going on ringside when those not tagged in weren't doing some tandem moves.
Nice match here, I was surprised to see The Cabinet lose this one, I figured they'd be finalist for sure seeing as how they were like the only trio in ROH when this thing was announced.
Lucha Underground
Best Match on LU (S3E9): Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Chavo Guerrero Jr. - Loser Leaves Lucha Match
As it sounds, a Loser Leaves Lucha will see one of these men leave the company. Very tense indeed, especially considering the lineage and legacy of these two. Speaking of that, to support his son, Chavo Guerrero Sr. AKA Chavo Classic was in the front row and got involved (we'll get to that). Whilst I have seen 0 of Chave Classic's matches, I know I love this jazzy tune dedicated to him by The Mountain Goats;
It's mind boggling how Rey is still so awesome. They had a nice story of it being Rey wanting to fight honourably with Chavo being more aggressive and underhanded. Chavo went after the knee of Mysterio viscously, slamming it against the ring post putting Rey in a deep single leg crab. Looked real nasty.
Chavo Classic stormed in the ring with a chair and clonked his son in the head, which was kinda shocking at first, and then when the bell rang for a disquallification it all fell into place. He got Chavo the DQ victory, which was damn smart, apart from hitting his son in the head with a chair. THOSE PESKY GUERREROS!
The match was restarted however by Dario Cuerto, with a DQ being no way to end such a match. The match carried on, similar to how it had been before that whole kurfuffle.
Mysterio eventually won with a 619-splash combo, sending Chavo packing. Really cool match here, I liked it a lot.
I think it is 'Aztec Warfare' next week, soon at least. With it being like one big match with 20 people over an entire episode, it might be a bit cheating to give everyone points on the leaderboard by default, so I might pick an MVP or two. Let me know if you have any other ideas.
The Verdict
Best Match of the Week: Charlotte vs Sasha Banks - RAW Women's Championship Hell in a Cell Match
FIGHT ME. Despite the wonky start and wonky finish, I thought the women's title Hell in a Cell match was the best match I watched this week. Undeniable effort and heart from both of the women in there. I also want to say that Mysterio/Guerrero was a very close second, and I really rate it too. Both are definitely worth a watch.
And with that, its another week in the records, and another update to the leaderboard, which is a near mirror image of this link here. I haven't forgotten about it yet, its time for the third weekly 'Best Wrestling Quote of the Week'!
'Are you forgetting how much I love violence!?' - Dario Cuerto
That's about it from me this week people. I hope the next few days of your lives are filled to the brim with smiles and hugs.
Have a good one guys!
