BWOTW Special: Conor McGregor, Stay The Fuck Away From My Wrestling

Hello there fellow peeps, Edgeheads and Jerichoholics, and welcome to this 'BWOTW Special', in which we will discuss the topic of Conor McGregor in WWE, and if you couldn't tell from my title, I don't want that to happen.

This is a subject that's been floating around for a while, and I've always had an opinion. However, after seeing this upload on WWE's YouTube, I felt like this needed to be addressed;

WWE posted similar articles/tweets/videos in the lead to AJ Styles' debut and Goldberg's return amongst other things, and they usually lead to things coming about that way. So, if this trend continues, we might be seeing McGregor in a WWE ring sometime soon.

I have an issue with this.

Let's look first at the positives of this situation so that this isn't a post entirely comprised of piss and vinegar. If McGregor comes in, that would most definitely bring eyes on the product and the mainstream attention that WWE yearn for nonstop. On top of that, some money would probably be made for the company, and we all know Vince loves that green. That's all I've got for positives, let me know if you can come up with any more.

Here now, let me unleash a wave of moaning with some hopefully valid points. To get us underway, let's get the obvious out the way: Conor McGregor doesn't fucking wrestle. With this there are two ways to look at it.

The first way is in the simplest form; Conor McGregor, physically, doesn't fucking wreslte. When was the last time that WWE had someone with 0 wrestling experience have a high-profile match that wasn't utter dog shit? Mayweather, Snooki, Michael Cole, Butterbean, Akebono, Shaq, Eva Marie (I kid), but you get the point.

Here's how I see it going; McGregor gets in the ring, they exchange hands, couple submission spots, McGregor gets slammed a couple times, McGregor finishes them, everyone leaves disappointed. You can't expect McGregor to learn to wrestle any more than the bare minimum, so the opponent is gonna have to do a lot to make the match work.
Coinciding with this, not only does that make the match have a low ceiling for quality, but it also makes him a liability in injuring people. Yes, injuries happen even when you have veterans in the ring, but there is much lower risk. Also, if he goes off like Lesnar on Orton at SummerSlam or just hasn't quite figured out how to safely throw his strikes, he's gonna fuck some people up, and that is never fun to watch.

This isn't to say that a UFC fighter can't translate well to wrestling. Case and point; Matthew Riddle. Riddle is quickly becoming one of my favourite wrestlers and heavily incorporates his MMA background into his in-ring moveset, and its fucking awesome. Love me some Riddle.

Another part to this 'Conor McGregor doesn't fucking wrestle' is more of a mentality issue. Judging by his past statements on WWE, more on that later, I'm sure we can firmly assume he is not a fan, or has much knowledge on wrestling whatsoever. With this, we can make the safe guess that his main interest is a payday. Looking at how those attitudes have affected content quality in the past (lookin' at you WCW), things aren't looking too good.

Secondly, there is the issue of booking. Whether its a multi-match deal or as a one off, as with many part-timers, I'm fairly sure we're not gonna see McGregor eat a pin. So, whoever he faces is most probably going to lose. Great.

I already mentioned McGregor's past comments on the WWE, and I would be surprised if he comes in to a parade of open arms from the roster. I doubt calling your future co-workers 'pussies' on Twitter is a good way to go about making friends. Although being put in a match with McGregor could be beneficial to someone in the WWE purely for the spotlight, is it worth risking injury and the possibility of being booked to be destroyed?

We are already in the midst of what I like to call 'The Brock Lesnar Problem'. By this, I mean that Lesnar has been booked in such a way that he appears virtually unstoppable, and in doing so, you've made a clear assertion that he is 'better' than the entire roster, causing a massive divide in between him and everyone else. This also has gone towards the idea that UFC fighters are better than pro wrestlers, and I hate to say this but CM Punk's loss hasn't helped the matter.

In this respect, Lesnar vs McGregor seems like the only matchup that isn't going to harm the roster the most. However, if that does take place, that's a big main event spot that might go to waste. Other than Lesnar, I can only really see John Cena being the one to be getting in a programme with McGregor. He's reliable, can carry a match, and will probably be the least harmed by doing the job.

And there you have it; my semi-coherent ramble about why I'd fucking hate McGregor to be in WWE in any capacity. More bad than good, and the benefits have costs. Plus, from the impression that I get, I think he truly is a first-class cunt.
