Just want to take a moment to pay my respects to Kris Travis, a British wrestler who lost his battle to stomach cancer this week. At 32, this was far too soon. My thought are with his friends and family.
The best news this week is as follows;
- IT'S FUCKING WRESTLEMANIA ON SUNDAY - Just a heads up, I think Takeover Dallas and 'Mania will have their own post - Best of WrestleMania Weekend.
- More qualifiers for the WWE Global Cruiserweight Tournament have been announced, the UK qualifiers will be held on future RevPro and PROGRESS shows. According to PWInsider, the entire tournament will be taped over a week at Full Sail sometime in June. Once again, these developments are giving me an increasingly growing wrestling erection. Sweet Jesus I'm hyped.
There was another development as of writing, Wrestling Observer have said that the tournament will feature Rich Swann (USA), Tommaso Ciampa (USA), Johnny Gargano (USA), Ho Ho Lu (China), Noam Dar (Scotland), Akira Tozawa (Japan) and motherfucking Zack Sabre Jr (England) - Luke Harper's had successful knee surgery - Fuckin' Yeah!
- As reported by SEScoops, the WWE has apparently commissioned a new Women's Championship Belt. Thank God we're getting rid of the shitty butterfly/vagina belt and finally have a title that looks like its worth something more than £25. Rumours are that it will resemble the WWE World Heavyweight Title and will be presented by a legendary woman before the triple threat this weekend.
Directing the spyglass towards the week's matches, this is what we see:
Monday Night RAW
Best Match on RAW (28/3/16): Kofi Kingston vs Alberto Del Rio
Brooklyn loves The New Day and they made sure that we knew it. New Day be over as fuck. This was the 'go home' RAW - the last one before 'Mania - it started with a bug segment with Shane and Taker, there was one for the world title match later, the other matches had a little bit of development. This match is in preparation for New Day vs The League of Nations (AKA #LadsLadsLads), both teams were on the outside, so there were shenanigans in this match. Kofi and 'Berty put on a good solid match, had a variation of Rio's stomp, Kofi did a Trevor Lee like Mushroom stomp, New Day antics, all good stuff.
For some reason their match at 'Mania is no longer for the tag titles, now its just for supremacy or whatever bullshit, however this could mean that The Rock's unknown role in 'Mania this year is to even up the sides by joining The New Day for an 8-man tag.
Thursday Night SmackDown!
Best Match on SmackDown! (31/3/16): Heath Slater vs AJ Styles
SD! this week was 70% promos, 20% Renee and Saxton talking, 10% matches, well there was 2. This was the better of the two. AJ slapped the piss out of all the Social Outcasts. Slater did have more offence than I would've thought, at one point landing a big ol' kick on AJ's bearded Georgian chin. We're saving ourselves for 'Mania guys, let the jets cooldown for it.
NXT
Best Match on NXT (30/3/16): American Alpha (Chad Gable & Jason Jordan) vs Corey Hollis & John Skyler
It was butternut squash match-arooni this week on NXT, with the build into Takeover needing everyone to go in with some momentum. 4 matches, all quite short. This was probably the longest and was the best in my opinion. Just the usual American Alpha goodies. Not much else.
Ring Of Honour TV
Best Match on ROH TV (26/3/16): Hirooki Goto vs Jay Lethal - ROH World Championship Match
Jay Lethal has been Ring Of Honour Champion now for around 15 months and he deserves it. This week's main event saw him face a challenging Japanese import, Hirooki Goto, and the crowd were evenly split. It was a great matchup, with Lethal getting his ass handed to him for quite a while. Lethal did have his moments, he showed off probably the best suicide dive in professional wrestling today. I've not seen loads of Goto, but I like him. His entrance is a bit iffy, I feel his music's intro is a bit too long. Anywho, his was good here, and they made him look like a legitimate threat to the title. In the end, Lethal retained his championship.
After the match, he was confronted by former ally Donovan Dijak. He is good, but I'd like to see others have a programme for the title ahead of him, like Matt Sydal or Dalton Castle.
The Verdict
Best Match of the Week: Hirooki Goto vs Jay Lethal - ROH World Championship Match - ROH TV (26/3/16)
Even though it was a weak week on the WWE side side making this an easy win win, this was a great anyway. Its better than WWE's offerings of previous weeks by far. We cant blame them much though, fuckin Mania and Takeover is on the doorstep, looking through the window and asking to come inside for a chat and a cuppa, so we're gonna be force fed some goodness.
Other Wrestling Goodness:
WWE 24 - Thank You Daniel Bryan (this made me cry)
A mini documentary on Zack Sabre Jr - so far my money's on him winning the tourney
