On the week beginning the 7th of March 2016, I put up my first weekly review, the very first time that I decided upon the best wrestling of the week. Said post saw the short lived Y2AJ challenging the New Day for the WWE Tag Team Championships, a pre-uber-badass Neville, Lio Rush winning the Ring of Honour Top Prospect Tournament, and the best match we saw was Samoa Joe versus Sami Zayn in a 2 out of 3 falls match.
Since then we've seen some amazing things. AJ Styles' rise to the top of WWE, Shinsuke Nakamura's takeover, the reinvention of the Cruiserweights, a brand split, the phenomena that is #BROKEN Matt Hardy, Kenny Omega ruling Japan and even getting to witness the NXT debut of Bobby Roode in person, plus much, much more. And with a year's worth of Best Wrestling of the Weeks, lets us look at how things have ranked, by looking at the leaderboard results.
Out of the 229 wrestlers that take a place on the leaderbaord, coming in at first place is the BWOTW Wrestler of the Year, 'The Phenomenal' AJ Styles. Being the best on the card a whopping 31 times, and winning the prize of Best Match of the Week 4 times, he sits atop the world at 43 points.
Another standout achievement that comes from this leaderboard is that two men possess the achievement of most matches of the week, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson, collectively known as The Young Bucks. Seven times they have been a stand out of the week, these matches spanning across Ring of Honour, New Japan Pro Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.
With a retrospective look at the leaderboard, there is a whole host of wrestlers I never thought I would be covering such as The Headbangers and Shane McMahon. What a fucking strange past year this has been.
Looking forward now, there is another 52 weeks ahead that beg to be reviewed and perused. In doing so, there are a few things I would like to announce and address going forward.
- FRESH LEADERBOARD: In an effort to give a new year a new feel, the leaderboard has been refreshed, ready for the 2017/18 season. Point scoring will remain the same however, and this past year's leaderboard will remain available alongside it.
- THE BEST PROMO OF THE WEEK: Its been a couple months since I introduced 'The Best Wrestling Quote of the Week' and although it started off relatively strong, I find myself awarding this to whole promos rather than specific lines. Therefore, moving forward, this will now be known as 'The Best Promo of the Week', giving a spotlight to whole promos worthy of note, whether it be interview style, a direct address or a back and forth between more than one party.
- THE YOUNG BUCKS SUPERKICK COUNTER: I am going to make some slight adjustments to the Superkick Counter attached to all of The Young Bucks' matches. Until now, the counter has only included superkicks that at least one of the Young Bucks have been involved in (e.g. a triple superkick with Adam Cole would count as 3, and say a double with one of the Bucks and Cole would count as 2). Going forward, all superkicks delivered by any Young Bucks teammates will be awarded, so if Kenny Omega lands one on his own, it will count. Just to prevent me getting confused is all.
Though this might not have been a spectacle of a celebration, I'd like to take some time now to thank everyone for the support they have shown, whether it be from the shares and likes from Facebook or from the upvotes and comments of the lovely people at /r/WredditCountryClub. Plus, thank you for the encouraging words on the different styles of posts I have done, with my Wrestlintroductions, my 'BWOTW: Special' discussion pieces, the tournament guides and even the poetry, it all is very kind. Also, to everyone who has spoken to me and embraced this love of professional wrestling I have, I thank you. Though it is a niche thing and has a certain stigma to it, you have yet to judge me.
Thank you all. Here's to another year.
